Buying a Car

Buying a new or used car is one of the largest repeat purchases — and financial commitments — that most families face.

At Norway, we can help you make your car purchase more rewarding. Here on our website, you'll find valuable advice, helpful calculators and other useful links. Then when you're ready to buy, visit your local Norway branch to meet with one of our friendly, knowledgeable experts for help financing the car of your dreams.

Take it slow

Don't buy a car when you're in a hurry. Set aside the time and do it right.

Look around

In the old days, dealers had the upper hand in negotiating because they had all the pricing information. No more! Thanks to the Internet, today's customers can find comprehensive pricing, rebates, and other key information on virtually any car.

Set limits

Before you visit car dealers, use our How Much Car Can I Afford calculator to determine monthly payments for different sizes of auto loans. This will help you figure out what you can spend on your car — and stick to it!

Make the most of test drives

Take control by telling dealers you are not buying a car today. Then surprise yourself. Test a variety of cars (for at least 20 minutes each) -- in a variety of road conditions. Which ones do you like? Trust your instincts. If you don't like one right off, it probably isn't going to grow on you.

Narrow it down

Before buying, narrow down your choices to one or two makes or models that fit your budget and preferences. Any more will just be confusing.

Need a loan?

Norway Savings offers a range of value-added Auto Loans that can help you get the most of your hard-earned money.

Work with reputable dealers

We've partnered with quality Auto Dealers in the region that we are proud to recommend.

Check the numbers

When all the numbers are in, see if the car fits your total budget. Then take control by negotiating up from the dealer's invoice cost (see or other pricing guides), not down from the asking price.

Be pleasant but firm. And be prepared to walk away if necessary. There's always another car around the corner.

Close the deal

When — and only when — you are content that the car of your choice fits your means, close the deal. Then drive home. With a smile on your face!
