Josh Kennison

Josh Kennison, an elite para-athlete from South Paris, Maine, was born a quad amputee, missing both his feet and arms, his tongue and half of his jaw. He is the exemplification of what it means to overcome obstacles. But Josh doesn't see it that way. He does not feel he has faced adversity or overcome limitations. He says he has simply followed his dream of becoming a professional athlete. Kennison began running track and playing soccer in middle school. But it was in high school that his passion — and competitive para-athletic career — ignited when he received prosthetic running legs from his doctor, who had recognized his propensity for speed. Before this time Josh had trained on his walking legs, prosthetics without ankles and knees designed just for getting around. He worked around these limitations, building incredible strength. So with his new prosthetic running legs, he soared. And his sports career took off. In 2010 Josh became a member of the USA Paralympics Track Team, winning four medals at the Endeavor Games. He recently broke the world record for the long jump.

"I am always training," said Kennison about his competitive process. "I am always trying, always preparing. I have to stay focused all the time."

This past summer Josh competed at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France. He won the bronze medal in the 100m T43 sprint, finishing the race in 11.93 seconds, and earning his first world championship medal for track.

Even more impressive than Kennison's athletic accomplishments are his achievements off the track. A motivational speaker and recipient of the 2010 Amway Hero award, Kennison is involved with the Never Say Never Foundation. This foundation provides running legs, wheelchairs, and other equipment to help amputees remain active. Additionally, he attends Camp No Limits in the summers, lending support and encouragement to children with limb loss, and teaching them basic skills, such as tying shoes and playing sports.

"You can do anything you want, as long as you have the right mindset," Kennison said. "I never give up. If I have my mind set on something, I am going to make it happen — whether it takes days, or weeks, or months. Getting the world record was amazing, but now I want to take it to the next level — I want to bring home a gold medal!"

Josh has been a Norway Savings Bank customer since high school. "He just lights up our entire staff when he walks in the branch," says Katie Letourneau, Vice President and Loan Officer. "He is a true inspiration."
