Dave Cowens

Dave Cowens is a basketball legend, a resident of Maine, and a Norway Savings Bank customer. He has had a long, colorful career — both on and off the court. Dave's passion for competition began when he started playing sports in grade school. "As a kid, I just liked to play. As I got older, I just kept on playing and I got better and better. I think you improve when you work hard and have passion."

Dave went on to Florida State University, where he gained national attention by averaging 19 points and 17 rebounds a game. In the 1970's draft, Dave was picked fourth — by a well-known Boston team in the first-round.

When asked about his path to success, Dave answered humbly, "In truth, it's not a very glamorous story. I worked hard at basketball because I didn't like to sit out in a game. I can't stand being still. So I practiced and practiced. And when I wasn't practicing, I was training at the gym lifting weights. I knew if I was fundamentally sound, the coach wouldn't have a reason to take me out of the game. I didn't work hard to play professional basketball ball — I worked hard so I could just keep playing."

During Dave's decade of playing professional basketball in Boston, he had many notable accomplishments. He was selected seven times to play in the All Star Games and in 1973, he was chosen as the professional league's MVP, as well as the MVP of the All-Star Game. In the 1977/78 season, Dave led his team in all statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals. Only four other players in history have achieved this feat. In 1978/79, he served as a player/coach for his Boston team.

In the early 1980s, Dave went on to play for another professional team in Milwaukee for one season. In the following years, he coached for different professional basketball teams. In 1991, Dave was recognized for his incredible talent, by being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Throughout his career, Dave has believed strongly in supporting organizations that do good work. He has coached more than 40,000 kids at basketball camps, teaching them skills, the importance of working hard, and the essential wisdom that being a good player means being a good team player. Dave also spent ten years as the Executive Director of the Sports Museum of New England where he raised funds for educational programs.

When asked what he is most proud about in his career, Dave answered, "Being an involved member of the community and helping people. I am as proud of the camps and my charity work as I am of anything I ever did on the court."

Norway Savings is proud to support Dave Cowens and honored to have him on our team.
